Susan Niemann: I would turn around the words of the wondrous Gustav Mahler: Since a composer says it so poetically in music, he doesn't bother with words.
Except, of course, some of Gustav Mahler's symphonic work contains choir.
I love centuries of classical music, from Palestrina through Shostakovich and BelΓ‘ Bartok.
But George Harrison has a special place.
George Harrison was such a deeply good man, with a voice wondrous for his spiritual message, and a trademark sound with guitar.
And the dance of the (presumably teenage) Girl -- my, that is how Mother Nature intends for a girl, a woman to feel.
To feel joy and to let the joy play in bodily rhythms of joyful dance.
Every woman, every girl should have this joy, and should live exactly the way she wants, without Church or State Puritanism.
You always set the artistic and spiritual tone just right.
My father always had classical music playing. So when you mention Shostakovich and Bartok, I know who you speak of. They were the rock stars of their time.
I have a new appreciation of George... putting these columns together teaches me so much! Thanks Armand... so good to have you here. πβοΈ
Iβve always loved Aretha, my favorite is Respect, but I enjoy others too. Cab Calloway is the kind of blues I like, too. Iβve seen that one before, when my kids watched cartoons on Saturday morning.
Loved Aretha and highway of loveβ¦ never knew Clarence played with her! Thanks for making my day with that tidbitβ¦still miss him in E-Street band. βΊοΈ
Gone too soon... he was a thoughtful, good man, I believe! I'm glad you liked these, Joan! I hope wherever you are, you're taking the heat wave in stride! Just listen to music... it'll keep you cool! π π
Thanks for George! He was the underrated member of the Fab Five. The Clapton angle is interesting, since Clapton stole George's wife.(Age of free love, I guess.π) That tune was in "Goodfellas". The scene when Henry gets busted.(Kaaaren! That helicopter has been following me all day! See it!πππ) The Queen! That is a fun song! Clarence Cleamons was a college football teammate of Mean Joe Greene at N.Texas State. Ben Miller was cool. Electric bluegrass!π Cab Calloway was a treat. Great playlist today. Have a good one, and stay cool.ππ
You are a walking music trivia expert, Charlie! ππππ All of that is so interesting! I love doing this because I always learn new stuff and hear new music! Stay safe in the heat! ππ
The Harrison video was winner of a competition. The dancers are Esteban Hernandez and Emma Rubinowitz of the San Francisco Ballet. It is just so refreshing.
Great video to go with a great song. I had to watch it a couple of times. I learned a lot with this week's column...which I hope others do as well! Thanks Dan...we need all the "refreshing" we can get! π
Once again you bring joy to my day with great music! Thank you for your contributions Susan as these days are not easy to get through for this 70 something woman. β€οΈ
Oh, Rhondaβ¦Iβm right there with you. I need things to take my mind off the depressing state of the countryβ¦and the behavior of some of our fellow citizens. Heartbreaking. But music helps. Have a safe and pleasant week. ππ
YAY! Love all of theseβ¦BUT the minute I ended with Cab Calloway I had to get Minnie the Moocher on! lol He was great! George Harrison-While My Guitar Gently Weeps was written/sung by him and is a favorite of mine! Aretha! Hell yes! Love her! Ben Miller Band was also great listening to! THANKS for these!!!
George Harrison, the quiet Beatle so much talent. All Things Must Pass was such a good album. All that creative talent pent up that was suddenly free. I have his Cloud Nine here ironically enough that album inspired Paul McCartney after he had a rather meh, 80βs. Too bad George only got one or two songs per album with the Beatles.
I'll be honest, the video didnt leave a major impact with me, but the song is terrific! We dont get to hear that much from George so, it's past time! Have a great week, Peter!

Love her song, Respect! Like your request for Dies Irae, a lot of great music is in movies, TV shows, and cartoons. I'm glad you mentioned it!

George was my favorite Beatle π€
It seems you are not alone in that feeling... gone too soon. He was a good human with so much talent! ππ
I also still love Ringo. I saw him live on his 80th birthday tour in Denver. He was amazing and still is!

Susan Niemann and Charles Austin: Because Eric Clapton coveted his own friend's love, Pattie Boyd, I retain no respect or love for Clapton.
Oh, I so agree. I am frustrated with Clapton on many levels, that being one of them.

"What Is Life" is my favorite Harrison song- philosophy with a beat!
And you can never really go wrong with either Aretha or Cab.
Aretha was a force, wasnβt she? Gotta that my pal Lebowski for the idea of Cab! π Have a great day Davidβ¦thank you!
