Music is an acquired taste... kinda like beets.
Tim's Playlist #7 -- 'Shine'
Holy crap! We’re creeping up on the 2000 subscribers mark! 👀 Who woulda thunk it? Tell your friends and family… be a subscriber and let’s talk!
He didn’t live long enough for me to know everything about him. I will ALWAYS be mad at him for not getting the colonoscopy. (Have you had one??) Luckily, while he was with me, he surprised me with an incredibly diverse collection of music.
Tim taught me how to listen. Really listen and open my soul to what I was hearing. Over drinks one night, he told me he loved Dolly Parton. Ugh.
Sorry, honey… I just can’t do Dolly.
Turns out, I can.
Tim pulled this up and I was actually taken back. I only knew Dolly for Jolene and doing great charitable work. Not denying her place in music history, I just wasn’t a fan… and hadn’t given her a real listen.
Dolly Rebecca Parton won her 7th Grammy for this brilliant bluegrass cover of Shine, a song by Collective Soul. Her version sped the original up a bit and was accompanied by the group Nickel Creek. I’ve always loved the talent of Chris Thiel on the mandolin. Sara Watkins is on the fiddle and Sean Watkins on guitar. I love the video, too, going from color to black and white.
And her high heels on a gravel road? Perfection.
Here’s the original by Collective Soul from their debut album, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, in 1994.
I’ve always been a late bloomer when it comes to music. It’s sort of like food…I never liked beets when I was younger, now I do. An acquired taste? 🤷🏼♀️
Dolly Parton, 78 years young, is a national treasure and her story is damned inspiring. Whenever I would say, “Her music just isn’t my thing”, I was looked at like I had three heads. She’s written 3000 songs, sold over 100 MILLION records and won 11 Grammys.
Her versatility is impressive, too. She and Steven Tyler teamed up for this one on her Rockstar album, released in November 2023. She sings with some of the greatest musicians in rock (read about that here):
So, open yourself up to beets… and some Dolly! Thanks for being here!

And politically (sorry) she advocates for the preservation of the bald eagle.
First of all…I love beets! My Italian grandmother always had beets with oil/vinegar/onions/basil/oregano… Second-Dolly is a treasure-not just singing, not just as an actress-but her generous book donations to children! We need more celebrities like her! Thanks for the positive vibes this morning Susan!
