I understand that Putin wants Alaska back. The president elect may just do that. Can you speak Russian?

Funny, we were just discussing that last night. I'm sure Vlad would love that, but the military has significant presence up here and evidently they are building a Navy basset go along with the Coast Guard, Army, and Air Force. And I was also told you really CANT see Russia from Sarah Plains house. 😂😂😂

Hey, Trump could put Putin in charge of the US military. Remember, we did not elect a sane person. As far as Sarah, haven’t heard much from her lately……..thank someone.

What beautiful photos!

Alaska in the winter is not for me because of the light. I learned that in a short trip to Iceland in October.

But those photos are tempting.

Hey Bridget...thank you so much. I guess Ive gotten somewhat used to the lack of light, but I do get sleepy around 8 when I think it's 10. 😂 Theres so much to do that I haven't been bothered, really. It's my first time here and honestly, I am in awe. Only 23 days left to cram as much as I can in!! :)

I'm a bear. The sun was rising around 10am and setting around 4 pm and every day my energy level dropped.

But it was incredibly beautiful if you've never been.

I would love to go back sometime in July and get manic.

😁

Thanks, Jena! I have 23 more days here and I hope to make them count. Today, though, I was locked up inside and had to do client work. Oh, well. I am thrilled to be employed, so...😂

I really enjoyed reading this and your sunrise photos are amazing! I’m sorry for your loss, and yes, get colonoscopies! There is a huge rise in colorectal cancers, especially in young people. Enjoy Alaska, I’d love to go one day (I’m in Switzerland).

Switzerland… you are on my list! I know somebody who knows somebody there and she says I can come anytime. 😂 I guess I’m getting good at mooching a place to stay. HAHA! Alaska really is something. I have 23 more days left then it’s back to reality, so I wanna make the time count! Thank you so much for reading! Greatly appreciated. :)

Great photos! I'm so jealous but glad to see you having a pleasant trip. Just wanted to thank you for sharing Tim's story. Had a positive colon cancer screening test and had decided to not get a colonoscopy nor seek treatment, but get the sense that even though I don't have anybody right now, I'll be letting someone down if I do not adress this. I am going to set an appointment with a gastroenterologist today! Thanks!

Expand full comment

Thank Don.... it has been a true gift to be able to stay here. YES! PLEASE! Preventive tests like a simple colonoscopy will save your life. Keep me posted and take care!!!

Got that appointment scheduled! It's a strange feeling that you have nothing to live for so no need to adress medical issues. Seeing here and other places that other folks who had the things I never did but lost them find a way to move on helped me decide to do this. Thanks.

I only have one daughter and I never really see her. So I kind of understand but I have MYSELF to live for… lots of interests and hobbies to keep me going! I’m so glad you made the appointment!!

Love the picture of you…happy and delighted and embracing the cold! I was in Wasilla during Sarah’s reign… saw her at the PO when I mailed postcards beck home! Best thing we did was dog sled… you must try it! You just sit there while musher mushes and the dogs fly you over the snow like a magic carpet! Your photos are stunning…black and white especially say Alaska! I’m so happy for you having this time to reflect and discover and find your next chapter! Hugs and love, Susie Sunshine! 🥰☀️🤗🤗

Hey Joan! Dog sledding? OK! I'll check that out. It sounds like fun! Some people probably think I'm nuts, but now that I understand how to deal with the weather, I absolutely love it! THANK YOU for being here! ❤️❄️

Awesome post!

This Californian loves Alaska too! In the late 1980s, I sang in 2 different top-40 cover bands. The first one was hired for a 6-week gig in Juneau during the summer. It was overcast every day and light all day and night save for a few hours between 2a-5a.

Then, a different band was hired for a 6-week gig in Fairbanks in Jan/Feb. oh my Buddha. Cold and dark. The sun would come up in a beautiful sunrise every day at 11a for 2 hours never higher than just at the horizon. It was 30 below a few of the days there. Everyone handled it well even me! I went out each dark day on a wee hike at the hotel we lived at and worked in listening to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians who had just come out with their first album. I’d listen to my Sony Walkman with headphones and dance in the snow. It was there that I learned people would hitch their cars to electrical posts at supermarkets and banks while they did their errands, keeping the engine warm with a special heating pad over it. It was like the old west hitching a horse to a post. So cool.

So beautiful. So cold, and yes, livable!

Rock on, Susan! Have a fantastic Alaskan adventure!

Appreciate that, Dana...your story about the heating pad over the engine is really interesting. THIRTY BELOW!! 😳 I havent tested my winter attire in that yet, but I dont leave till the end of December so there may still be a chance! 😂😂 I had a Sony Walkman, too! I was so bummed out when it finally gave out. Those were the days!!! Thanks for being here....it means a lot! ✌️

Great pictures! It was 7 below at my house yesterday. The tundra cold. However, we like our Everclear 151 with hot apple cider to warm us up. They call it apple pie. 🤣 Dangerous stuff. I need those shoe guard things. It gets so goddamn icy out here. I pull a muscle in my vagina trying to get to the truck. Nothing like the mountains. I'm so happy for you. Just be. Love ya! ❤️

LOL😂😂😂😂 You crack me up.

SEVEN BELOW! Yikes.... but the technology behind the cold weather gear is amazing...I've been good-so far! And yes... order you some Katoolahs. They are a complete game changer! I go to a gym here, but I also take a walk and they have kept me upright! 😆 Love ya!!

Loved Alaska when we visited there for 10 whole days. Never got to see the northern lights, so that’s still on my want to do list. Spouse is not very mobile these days so our travel is restricted to places not requiring lots of walking ( just when I was considering Iceland, lol)

Expand full comment

Oh, yes...the northern lights. I'm not sure I'll get to see that....but I still have a little over 3 weeks, so, we'll see. ICELAND would be a dream trip for sure!

I'm sorry to dice my commentary into tiny pieces. This piece just left me dumbfounded. You're awesome. Cold is about the attitude in the proper gear. Nothing less, nothing more. It can be a cleanser as you facilitated it to be. Your spirit is indomitable! You inspire me. Thank you. 🙏

Hey Hudson...before my last breath, I feel compelled to see and do as much as I am able. And you're so right about the proper gear. I've been toasty warm when I'm dressed right. To be able to see this and breathe this air is such a gift. I'm glad you liked the piece and that you're here! THANK YOU! :) 💙✌️

Good morning! Or good day I should say because I have no idea what time it is for the globetrotting set....😜

I couldn't help but think of my favorite Mark Twain episode after our exchange yesterday.

The man was heavily invested in Thomas Edison's competitor during his retirement. Yeah, crazy. Anyway he needed 2500 bucks a month or just to survive at his Connecticut state. Being the typical Missouri boy, he put his head down and moved forward. His solution was to prostitute himself as a lecturer. It was a wise decision financially and an unexpected spiritual boom.

Universities and high-end men's organizations being his major clientele. At universities he would take questions and engaging polite banter with the students sometimes for over an hour after his lecture. At one such event, a young man this question. "What are the two greatest words in the English language ?"

He stood with his chin pinched between his fore finger and thumb for two minutes. Suddenly his eyes widened and his finger shot in the air "not guilty!" he exclaimed ....😂

Personally, I can't argue with that. 😬

HA! It's 8:34am here in Anchorage...so half the day of virtually everyone I know is already over! Anyway, Thats a great story! Not Guilty! 😂

So it's still dark? Daylight between 11 and 230? 🤣

LOL. Sunrise here today is 9:48, so it's dark as I write this. Sunset will be 3:50. Dark...a lot. But it hasn't bothered me, oddly.

Oh yeah, I left out the part about losing his ass when the alternating current design of Thomas Edison was adopted. Obviously the rest is self-explanatory. My brain!!!

Mark Twink said a lot of things best. One of my favorites ..

"The best form of government is democracy, tempered by assassination." 😉🌹✌️

On a personal level, "the older I get, the more people I meet, the more I like my dog ." is exactly where I'm at. 😂🤣😆
