Hey New Subscribers! 👋 Thanks for signing up to Susan Speaks. I’m thrilled you’ve joined our community! Occasionally, I share music Tim, my guy, would send me. Tim passed away May 7, 2021 from colon cancer… so you know what to do. Schedule your colonoscopy, please.
Music. Any kind. Tim loved it all. One the greatest lessons he taught me was to appreciate every genre. And there is much to love about John Prine.
Most of you know this masterful songwriter. (I discovered him later in life.) ‘I Remember Everything’ is the last song he ever recorded. And I get tears in my eyes every time I hear it.
I've been down this road before
I remember every tree
Every single blade of grass
Holds a special place for me
And I remember every town
And every hotel room
And every song I ever sang
On a guitar out of tuneI remember everything
Things I can't forget
The way you turned and smiled on me
On the night that we first met
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dewI've been down this road before
Alone as I can be
Careful not to let my past
Go sneaking up on me
Got no future in my happiness
Though regrets are very few
Sometimes a little tenderness
Was the best that I could doI remember everything
Things I can't forget
Swimming pools of butterflies
That slipped right through the net
And I remember every night
Your ocean eyes of blue
How I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dewHow I miss you in the morning light
Like roses miss the dew
Did you know John was a mailman, served in Vietnam, and wrote Angel of Montgomery, one of my favorite songs ever?
Prine had squamous cell cancer on the right side of his neck and had a major surgery to remove a piece of his neck. His vocal cords were damaged, resulting in his gravelly voice. It took him a year to recover. In 2013, Prine underwent surgery to remove cancerous growth in his left lung.
But it was COVID that claimed him and he passed away in April 2020. We had tickets to see him in May that year. Damn.
He was nominated for a Grammy 13 times and won four. Prine’s music has inspired Jason Isbel, Brandi Carlisle, Amanda Shires, and many others.
Hope you all enjoyed John. 💙
And thanks, Tim. Playing your music puts you right here with us.
Now, about that colonoscopy…..
I've loved John Prine since I was turned onto him in my teen years. Seeing that video of John and Bonnie Rait singing "Angel from Montgomery" put a lump in my throat. He was a giant of American music. He wrote about what he knew.
I love John Prine Susan. There is a video on YouTube from Austin City Limits with him performing Angel of Montgomery with Bonnie Raitt which is really good I don’t know if you’ve seen it but it’s really good 😊!
